Smoke Unit Maintenance

The key to long term operation of the ProtoSmoke units is to maintain sufficient smoke fluid saturation
of the wicking. The following maintenance tips will prolong wick life and keep the smoke flowing.
When adding smoke fluid to a unit, turn the unit OFF first, add the fluid, blow a small "puff" of air into
the exhaust to clear any bubbles that may have formed, and allow the unit to sit for 5 to 10 minutes
before operating. 20-30 drops of fluid should be added to a unit before operation when an engine is
first taken from the box and run. For general operation, we recommend adding 25-30 drops of fluid
when the smoke volume begins to decrease. Finally, when the engine is to be stored for an extended
period of time, 15-20 drops should be added to the unit. For fluid, we recommend ProtoSmoke from
MTH, Live Steam from LVTS, or LGB Smoke Fluid. The wicking should be inspected at regular
intervals for evidence of overheating, scorching or charring of the wick, and other damage. Lift the
circuit board from the housing by removing the screws from the top of the unit and carefully prying up
the board. If the wick is charred or has hardened, it should be replaced.
