Traction Tire Maintenance

MTH Electric Trains is known for the tremendous pulling power its engines. Much of this power is thanks
to the use of neoprene traction tires on the drive wheels. With the proper maintenance, these tires can
provide high traction for many hours of operation.

The most important thing to remember about traction tires is to keep them, and your rails, clean and dry.
Oil, grease and smoke fluid on the track can cause the tires to slip, and that means less traction.
Additionally, oils can make the neoprene swell and come off the drivers. And when this happens while the
engine is highballing through the far reaches of your railroad empire, the ensuing derailment will put a
major damper on your running session.

MTH recommends using denatured alcohol for cleaning both the track and the tires. Rubbing alcohol
should not be used because it can cause the neoprene to dry and crack, which will shorten the life of the
tires. Invert the engine on a soft surface, making sure that it is supported and will not roll. If a steam
engine, connect the tender harness. Using jumper wires, connect the engine to the transformer, and cycle
into forward. Apply a cotton swab that has been dipped in alcohol to the drive wheels with light pressure,
turning the swab against the wheel. Repeat as necessary until the swab comes away clean.

When replacing tires, make sure to remove the entire old tire from the drivers and clean the wheel itself.
The new tire should be fully seated in the groove. Rotate the drivers by turning the motor flywheel by
hand, and check the tire. It is also a good idea to clean the new tires to remove any coating remaining from
manufacture.
