OverviewDespite its bulky appearance, it was quick and nimble, stealthy and quiet. As the first regular passenger train departed from Penn Station on November 27, 1910, the two-unit DD-1 was at the head. It could handle a load with an enviable smoothness. Records indicate that the DD-1 could pull a 14-car passenger consists weighing 1,000 tons and could start a 850-ton train on a 1.93 percent tunnel grade. The DD-1s were built by and for the PRR in the road's Juniata shops. Westinghouse furnished the design for the electric engines powered by a live third rail. The PRR ordered 24 pairs of DD-1s in 1909 and the locomotives served the line well, but as new electrics began to arrive, the DD-1s were gradually taken out of service and transferred to the Long Island Railroad, where they served until the early `50s. This unusual engine is sure to attract attention! Making its debut in the Premier line, this fine scale replica is beautifully detailed and mimics the power and speed of the real locomotive. Offered in Pennsylvania and Long Island Railroad markings, this DD-1 will be an instant hit with your acquaintances. Did You Know? PRR 3936 and 3837, two surviving DD-1s, are housed at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA.
